⚽ FPL Gameweek 37 Tips

📰 Latest FPL News, Info and Opinion

👋 Hello 👋

It's the penultimate Newsletter of the season, and the final Double Gameweek where four teams are doubling:

  • Man City vs Chelsea (h), Brighton (a)

  • Man United vs Bournemouth (a), Chelsea (h)

  • Brighton vs Southampton (h), Man City (h)

  • Chelsea vs Man City (a), Man United (a)

Don't forget - Gameweek 37 deadline - Saturday 20 May, 11:00 UK ⏰

Thanks for all the feedback in last week's newsletter. I'll be looking to continue writing this every Gameweek for the 2023/24 season. I just need to sort the website out for it!

Man City Rotation

At this stage, Man City winning the league is a matter of when, not if. They have three games remaining and only need one win. They might even be confirmed as Premier League Champions before kicking another ball if Arsenal lose to Nottingham Forest.

When that happens, the chances of rotation increase.

I expect a similar team for Chelsea (h) as seen against Real Madrid. The main change is likely to be Riyad Mahrez (£7.4m) replacing Bernardo Silva (£6.7m).

If the league is won after that game, there will likely be a lot of rotation vs Brighton. Trying to guess which players will play twice in the Double is difficult.

Mahrez definitely has a chance, and Erling Haaland (£12.4m) will aim to add to his already impressive goal tally. Haaland has not been rested in the league when fit, although this might be the first time...

Everyone else is at risk of starting only once, including Ederson (£5.4m).

Generally, I recommend holding any Man City players you have, even if there's a chance they only play once. The only time I'd consider transferring them out is if there's a significant upgrade (more on that later).

Outside of Mahrez and Haaland, I believe Julián Álvarez (£6.0m) also has a chance of two starts, but my confidence levels for that prediction aren't too high. Many people are considering selling Alexander Isak (£7.0m) for Álvarez, which makes sense if he starts twice. However, if he doesn't, the fixture against Leicester (h) could be very lucrative for Isak's points total.

Rashford Back Training

Good news if you're a Marcus Rashford (£7.2m) owner - he's back in training.

It's still worth waiting to see what Erik Ten Hag says about him, but hopefully he'll be available for Double Gameweek 37.

If he is that's an easy hold, and if you're someone that doesn't own and has a spare transfer - I'd consider buying him too.

Grealish to Fernandes

Should you sell Jack Grealish (£7.2m) for Bruno Fernandes (£9.5m)?

If my prediction of Grealish starting once in Double Gameweek 37 is correct, a move for Fernandes is worth it, even for a four-point hit.

Fernandes will likely play 160-180 minutes in Man United's double against Bournemouth (a) and Chelsea (h), followed by 80-90 minutes against Fulham (h) in Gameweek 38.

Even if Man United secure top 4 by beating both Bournemouth and Chelsea, Fernandes should start against Fulham with enough recovery time before the FA Cup final.

His minutes are guaranteed, he's the first-choice penalty taker, and he'll likely play as a number 10 in all three matches. While he's more expensive than Grealish, money isn't a major concern at the moment. It's more about selecting the best players for the limited spots in our squads.

Salah to Fernandes

Selling Mohamed Salah (£13.1m) for Fernandes is a tricky question.

If we're looking at who will score more points in Gameweek 37 and the combined Gameweek 37 and 38, Fernandes would have to be the answer - the extra fixture can't be underestimated.

However, it's not an ideal time to part ways with Salah. Liverpool are still in the race for top four and have favourable fixtures against Aston Villa (h) and Southampton (a), who have already been relegated.

There's something that doesn't sit right about this transfer, but if selling Salah is the only option to bring in Fernandes, it might be necessary. You can always bring Salah back for the final game if you have enough transfers.

If possible, I'd explore alternative ways to bring in Fernandes if you can.

📈 Transfer Activity 📉

Double Gameweek players are in high demand, and Luke Shaw (£5.2m) is the most transferred-in defender with 163,347 new owners. It's an ideal time to bring him in, as there's a strong likelihood of clean sheets in the next three fixtures. He's also the only Man United defender I'm confident is completely nailed-on, although we should remember that anything can happen in Gameweek 38 if a team has nothing to play for.

Gabriel Martinelli (£6.6m) has reportedly been ruled out for the season, leading to 288,918 FPL managers removing him from their teams. If you prefer Arsenal players, a suitable alternative at a similar price would be Martin Ødegaard (£6.8m). Presumably Leandro Trossard (£6.6m) will fill in on the left and could serve as an intriguing low-owned differential to consider too.

No thought is needed for Ivan Toney (£7.2m) - he's been banned for 8 months and won't be available for the rest of the season. It's time to sell! This week, I'd consider bringing in Álvarez for Man City's double. If you have an available spot for a Man United player, Anthony Martial (£6.3m) could be a consideration, although be aware of his injury history. Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.9m) is expected to be back this week, as indicated by Sean Dyche's positive comments in the press conference. However, remember that he was substituted at half time due to a groin issue in the match against Man City. Everton's remaining fixtures are against Wolves (a) and Bournemouth (h), two teams with not a lot to play for. Gabriel Jesus (£8.1m) is another option to consider, especially if you don't have space for an Arsenal midfielder currently.

👑 Captaincy 👑

The obvious choice here is Haaland. Man City's fixtures may appear difficult on paper, but both Chelsea and Brighton are capable of conceding multiple goals against Man City. Haaland will aim to increase his goal tally of 36.

There's a glimmer of hope if you're looking to do something different as there has to be a slight chance (although I must emphasize it's only a possibility) of him being benched against Brighton if the league is already secured.

If you're looking for an alternative, it's got to be a Manchester United player. We've seen Alexis Mac Allister (£5.6m) benched in Gameweek 36, and there might be a similar concern with Kaoru Mitoma (£5.7m) in Gameweek 37. There's no need to even discuss Chelsea players...

With Fernandes and Rashford, you have two players who, if fit and available, are likely to start both games in the Double. They will face Bournemouth and Chelsea, who have only kept three clean sheets between them in their last twenty matches combined.

💪 My Team 💪

I'm concerned about Ederson starting twice in Gameweek 37, but I have to play him.

I have two free transfers, but not much to use them on.

The main move I'm considering is replacing Isak with Álvarez. I just wish I had more confidence in him starting both matches.

Apart from that, I might prepare for Gameweek 38 or free up some funds to remain flexible.

Since Kepa Arrizabalaga (£4.7m) didn't start the last game, I could switch him to Jordan Pickford (£4.4m) who plays Bournemouth (h) in Gameweek 38, just in case Ederson doesn't play on the final day.

Alternatively, I could consider replacing Kieran Trippier (£6.1m) with Jakub Kiwior (£4.0m). I don't necessarily need another defender for Gameweek 38, as I'm happy with Shaw, Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.7m), and Pervis Estupiñán (£4.9m), but having depth is never a bad idea, and it would free up funds for other moves.

None of it is particularly exciting, but with a well-set-up team, I'm already thinking about the next Gameweek.
