⚽ FPL 2023/24 Price Reveals

📰 My thoughts & reactions

👋 Hello 👋

FPL 2023/24 is almost here and that means the newsletters are back too!

I’ll be sending you content throughout pre-season and then of course every Gameweek during the season itself.

The game hasn’t quite launched yet - my prediction is Wednesday or Thursday this week, but we have had some price reveals ahead of the new season so let’s chat about them.

💰 The most expensive options 💰

According to the official FPL Twitter account these are the two most expensive players in FPL this season. It begs the question what price Harry Kane might come in at - my guess is £12.5m the same as Mohamed Salah.

I think Erling Haaland had to be £14m this year, he was too good last season to be anything less. Unfortunately it’s not expensive enough to give us anything to think about, most of us will still start with him. In fact Man City’s fixtures look too good to turn down:

  • GW1 - Burnley (a)

  • GW2 - Newcastle (h)

  • GW3 - Sheffield United (a)

  • GW4 - Fulham (h)

  • GW5 - West Ham (a)

  • GW6 - Nottingham Forest (h)

As for Salah, there might be a conversation to be had about whether he needs to be included in our opening squads. Without seeing all player prices there’s no need to overreact or lock decisions in yet, but it’s going to be a consideration when you see some of the midfielders in the £8.5m - £9.0m bracket.

🔥 The £8.5m-£9.0 Midfielders 🔥

Son Heung-min comes in with a huge £3m price drop compared to the 2022/23 season. It’s not surprising after 152 points - his worst score in 7 seasons!

While last seasons performances might mean a lot of FPL managers need convincing - I think he’s really tempting. Son spoke recently about having hernia issues last season, he’s since had surgery for that. Spurs also have a new manager in Ange Postecoglou who will hopefully look to play a more attacking brand of football. They also now have James Maddison to feed both Kane and Son.

We knew Martin Ødegaard would be due a price rise after starting at £6.5m last season and ending on 212 points. If he can replicate anything close to that he’ll still be a steal at £8.5m. Before I decide I’ll need to see the prices of other Arsenal attackers, especially Bukayo Saka. My guess is he’ll come in at £9m and with penalties it might be worth paying the extra.

I’m not sure what to make about Bruno Fernandes’ price. He’s £8.5m compared to a starting price of £10m last season. He ended the season on 176 points, just 7 behind Kevin De Bruyne. He’s nailed to start every game and will surely keep penalties. I do kind of get why they dropped this price - it was hard to justify him at £10m outside of key parts of the season like Double Gameweeks. Even so, it feels quite cheap!

😎 Mid-Priced Forwards😎

During the second half of last season, Ollie Watkins was incredible. He finished with 175 points, netting 15 goals and also provided 8 assists. Aston Villa have only been on an upward trajectory since Unai Emery took charge and if that continues, Watkins is worth considering.

That being said, Christopher Nkunku is £0.5m cheaper. I know people often need convincing about new players to the league, but this is a guy that has 36 goals and 17 assists in 59 games for Leipzig over the last two seasons. Chelsea were awful last year but you’d expect significant improvement under Mauricio Pochettino. I think he’ll emerge as an early bandwagon during pre-season.

 🔴 Liverpool are interesting… 🔴

Last season I called for Trent Alexander-Arnold to be priced at £8m and it’s finally happened!

Although last season wasn’t his best, he has shown a lot of consistency over the last 5 seasons averaging 183.8 points a season!

The nice thing about that price is it will actually create some discussion about whether he’s worth owning, it’s not obvious to include him, but it definitely doesn’t rule him out. In prior seasons it might have made Andrew Robertson an obvious pick, especially now he’s £1.5m cheaper, but if he continues in this left centre back role I’m not sure I’d be all that interested.

Elsewhere I really like the look of Darwin Núñez at £7.5m. He’s not guaranteed minutes hence the lower price than last season, but if he does get a run he could prove to be a bargain.

🤔 Anything Else 🤔

Amari'i Bell at Luton looks to be our first playing £4.0m defender. He started 43 out of 46 games last season. Playing a Luton defender in my first XI isn’t top of my list of things to do, but as an enabler for the bench he might be worth it.

Kaoru Mitoma is a little cheaper than I expected, I thought he would be £7.0m but FPL have priced him at £6.5m. He has a bit of competition at that price point. Bryan Mbeumo is also £6.5m and has been changed to a midfielder this season. With Ivan Toney suspended Mbeumo should be on penalties. Morgan Gibbs-White is cheaper than both at £6.0m but with Nottingham Forest playing Arsenal, Man United, Chelsea and Man City during the first 6 Gameweeks, I’m probably avoiding completely.

Last season’s highest scoring defender with 198 points, Kieran Trippier, is priced at £6.5m. That seems like a fair price considering he started last season at £5.0m and finished at £6.0m. Newcastle have already strengthened in the transfer market by buying Sandro Tonali. That being said, their opening fixtures are tough and they’ll also have Champions League to contend with this year. It doesn’t mean Trippier isn’t worth considering, he’s just doesn’t come under the “no brainer” option for me.

The 2023/24 content has already started, earlier today I reacted to the price reveals live.

Pre-season will be packed full of content so if you’re not already subscribed make sure to click here.

The next newsletter will be out once the game has launched - including my first draft! The question is - should that be as soon as the game is live which could be in a few days, or should I wait a week?
